Circle: Dreamwidth has finally gotten it right in splitting the concepts of Subscription and Access and getting rid of the drama-inducing label of friends. In an attempt to avert potential future drama, I want to be absolutely clear on how I view these.
Subscriptions: I subscribe to people whose posts I want to read on a regular basis. I'm genuinely sorry if you feel slighted that I'm insufficiently interested in what you have to say to have it in my reading page [which doesn't mean I never read it]. This is a decision I review occasionally. I expect other people to do the same; if you find what I have to say interested and want to subscribe, cool. If I don't know you, that's fine; I'll probably check out your journal to see if I find you comparably interesting. If I consider you my friend and you choose not to subscribe, that's your decision. I may ask you what influenced your decision that my journal wasn't sufficiently interesting to subscribe to, in the hope of improving it and in the hope of bringing you back. I may even express disappointment. I still respect your decision.
Access: Access is a measure of trust, and I will use custom access groups for further refined level of trust. I haven't really settled on how I'm going to use this feature on the large-scale. Again, I hope that people will not take my failure to grant them access personally, or will discuss the issue with me privately if they do.
