WTF?
Dreamwidth connection is working again today. WTF?
- IIRC, worked briefly last Monday, stopped working Monday night.
- Worked Mon-Tue this week.
- Didn't work Wed this week.
- Works again Thu (today).
With it working, ping and traceroute still don't work from behind gateway [the UVerse modem/router/etc], but do work from gateway. This is presumably something to do with the configuration of gateway.
I have made no change to the configuration of gateway or anything behind it between the times it works and the times it doesn't. (I haven't rebooted it, although I'm finding it difficult to determine in the logs whether it rebooted itself. However, a manual reboot of the router when I wasn't able to connect of course didn't fix the problem.)
My IP address has not changed at all between working and non-working.
I am not having trouble with any other servers that I'm aware of.
The UVerse L2 tech yesterday said he was getting similar results to me using his test 2WIRE (could traceroute/ping from the router, but couldn't connect to port 80 from behind it, if I understood what he was trying correctly).
mark informs me Dreamwidth is not blocking anything on 99.0.0.0/8.
In over two hours on the phone with UVerse, I gathered very little new diagnostic data and got not resolution. I credit them for sticking with me and trying things, but they were clearly not prepared to deal with debugging strange network issues and were slowed by having to search a knowledge database that didn't apply very well to my problem.
In contrast, in #dreamwidth on freenode I found people who knew more than I did about network infrastructure and were able to direct me quickly to a series of things to test to diagnose the problem.
I don't know how much I can do to diagnose while it's working correctly, but I surely don't trust that the problem won't resume sometime in the next couple of days.
