Well, I'm home. Not for long, I head out again soon to DexCon on the "LARP Scholarship", as I believe
mnemex termed it. While I'm here, I thought I might write up a little convention report for Origins from the notes I jotted down on the plane on my way home. I may write up thoughts on some of the new games I played in the future.
Wednesday
Flew from Long Island MacArthur Airport. Travel was smooth, although I won't make the mistake of eating Chinese food in BWI airport again (1 hour layover). Got to the convention center around six. Got to the line to get a badge, and was stunned by the length of the line. See, last year I went to Origins on Wednesday also, and got in around 2 in the afternoon because flight options were weird. They didn't even open the counters for people to get badges until 5 or 6, and there was pretty much no line all night. So I waited in line for about an hour to get my badge, looked over at a comparable line to get Event tickets, and decided to just deal with them later and go look for something to do.
Interestingly, a game of Live Role-Playing Chess, which I had a lot of fun playing "too many times" last year (according to one of the event organizers) was just starting up. It was fun as usual, with bonus fun for the opportunity to enjoy recognizing and being recognized by people from last year, and learning a bit about how they'd tweaked the system in the intervening year. I still really want these guys to come to Noncon, and it's still never going to be worth it for the distance they'd have to travel.
The Event Ticket line still looked awful, and now it was uncertain whether it would be open long enough for people at the end of the line to get to the front, so I decided to hope for better luck on Thursday and head up to The Lab. (A phrase which became instantly stuck in my head as soon as I realized that "The Lab", the site of the Looney Labs Big Experiment, was on the second floor rather than the first floor this year. Like an earworm, I couldn't think about this room without that phrase, and its attendant Rocky Horror Picture Show implications flashing through my mind. Since I spent the majority of the convention in or around The Lab, this was somewhat silly.) I floated around a bit, kibbitzed a game of Volcano, might have actually played something, then drifted into the games of "Are You a Werewolf?" which were going on just outside, where I settled for a good many hours. I ran into a bit of a pattern of being the first-night kill, which was tough to shake on Thursday night. It was sort of funny: I was never lynched the first day, but very rarely lasted through the first night. Eventually, the ringing of my phone suggested that my roommates for the weekend had finally finished their drive out to Columbus, and I finished up my game, collected my stuff from the con hotel lobby, got directions to our hotel from their night manager, and walked back to the hotel; where I promptly talked to
wylddelirium for a good hour before we managed to sleep.
New Games Played: None
Old Games Played: LRP Chess, Are You a Werewolf?
I'm getting a bit tired of writing, so I'm going to stop here and continue later.
