Magus's Grimoire [Abridged]

[Written 2010-02-04, but delayed due to difficulty with jlj; sorry for the resulting late warning.]

I have two events that are important to me on the same weekend. I hate when that happens. This year:

NonCon is 2010-02-19/2010-02-21.

The Regency Tea Dance in Boston is 2010-02-21. [Note the new location convenient to the red line]

I haven't decided what I'm going to do about this, although I think I'm leaning toward the dance.

In any case, consider this a reminder to those of you interested in either event that they'll be occurring.

There's a discussion going on in a locked post of a dear friend of mine regarding Noncon. She has several legitimate gripes regarding the way the convention committee has acted in (mis)communicating with her in the past. The topic is resurfacing in fairly general terms for a good reason. What surprised me is some of the other people who posted in response also expressing their dissatisfaction with Noncon. For some of these people I don't know what they're unhappy about. I'd like to.

So I'm opening the floor. Please, if you have any issues with things which have been done regarding Noncon in the past, tell me. I'm no longer involved with the convention. I won't pass it to anybody else if you don't want me to. But I expect there will come a time when I'm involved in organizing this event again, and I'd like an opportunity to learn from our collective mistakes.

This post is public so people who aren't on my friends list can see it and respond. If you want to reply but aren't comfortable doing so publicly, send me an email or IM. (Same username as here at AIM or gmail)

I especially encourage responses regarding things I, personally, have done, but I want to know about anything which has happened which might discourage someone from coming back. I also welcome any reasons you may have had for considering attending Noncon but ultimately deciding not to. Discussions of these sorts of issues seem to keep cropping up around me, and more information is definitely better.

Regency Ball at Noncon
March 4, 8pm-12am, Vassar College "UpCDC"

Formal early 19th-century ball prompted by Susan de Guardiola to live music by the Walkers. Period costume encouraged but not required. Note that Regency events at conventions will generally not involve anything but Regency dance figures - steps are left out to simplify teaching to beginners.

P.S. Looks from the prior comments like we'll go with Friday, March 4 for the NSO Reunion Dinner. I'm going to talk to Saigon Cafe about whether we can reserve space there...it looks like we'll be a good size for that space (that is, small enough that we'll fit in there).

I've just received exceedingly good news regarding the topic of my somewhat cryptic earlier entry, "Dance".

That one was cryptic primarily because I was liking the poetry of putting it that way. This one is cryptic because the news isn't good enough for me to make an announcement, but it's good enough that I'm excited enough that I want to say something.
