Balticon con report interrupted by the following:

I just got a phone call from a friend of mine who is the owner of two wonderful pet rats. For some reason, the airline wouldn't let her fly home with them as usual, and she wasn't able to find another airline which would. She's had to leave the rats with a pet store in Queens, who have agreed not to sell them until the end of the week.

My friend is living in San Fransisco for about a year, then will be returning to New York. Is there anybody out there who feels comfortable caring for a couple of well-behaved rats for a year? Is there, by some amazing chance, somebody who's planning to head out to California by a non-airline method and could bring them along? (Hey, much stranger things have happened among my friends.)

I wonder if this will turn into an experiment in how well Fandom Express handles live cargo...

Heya, I just had to deal with this problem myself. Airlines don't allow people to fly with rats on board (because if the rats escaped from the luggage they might chew on the wiring), but all airlines do allow people to ship them as live animal cargo. There are special cages available online for $25, and other than that all that's needed are health certificates from the vet. She could totally have you ship them to her (it's about $150, but considering she's going to be gone for a year and she doesn't want to get rid of them, it might be worth it!).

I don't know if she's friended on your LJ, but [livejournal.com profile] thescaryfaery used to own rats, and may be amenable to holding onto them for a while, but probably not a year.

If it looks like you get someone in NYC to take them, I can work with you on the Fandom express; I can get as far as Columbus or Indianapolis for obvious reasons...

Looks like the rat thing got figured out! (Marie didn't know your email, so she asked others to pass the news along.)
