Went to see the new Harry Potter movie last night with B (thanks again for inviting us, if you read this) and two of my housemates. It was lots of fun. Only a couple of "they're making shit up, that never happened" moments that bothered me. More annoying was the "that's only in there because the fans would have screamed bloody murder if they'd pulled it" stuff. Like Luna Lovegood's entire character. I kind of want to go back and reread the book now, as things in the movie and things [livejournal.com profile] rm has said and been completely right about have given me a new appreciation for it. But I didn't want to talk about the HP movie.

I wanted to talk about the trailers. There sure were a lot of them. Two stood out in my mind.

First was the new Jane Austen movie. I have no opinion on the content itself, not knowing much about her life. The costumes weren't bad, but to my admittedly somewhat untrained eye the men's costumes looked about 40 years fashion-forward, and did I see a gentleman wearing evening dress on a sunny afternoon? I'm getting a bit tired of seeing only that one really sloppy way of tying a cravat, too—somewhere between a "Mail Coach" and a "Maharata" according to the Neckclothitania, I'd say. I'd like to see more refined gentlemen with a correspondingly more refined knot. But if the costuming was maybe a bit off, the couple of shots of dancing afforded us were just plain wrong. Such a disappointment.

But then . . . there was Balls of Fury. Which looks like it'll be an entertaining rent/watch on premium cable with a bunch of friends in the living room and a bunch of alcohol. Silly and fun. Then Masi Oka's face unexpectedly appears on the screen and you can hear the sound of about ten people scattered throughout the theater suddenly squeeing. Followed by about half those people saying, "Hiro!" Then, after the trailer is over, murmuring coming from all those same locations in the audience as, clearly, the squeers (squeeers?) explain to the people sitting with them what that was all about. That was a ridiculously fun moment.

The word should definitely be squeeers. Or, if they were really excited, possibly squeeeeeeeeers.

i only had a chance to look at it briefly since i was at work and the IT guys were geeking off with me for a little while, but it looked fairly informative. IIRC you were looking into that for a while...

in general, the magazine is pretty good.

Your scorn of the Jane Austen movie makes me giggle. Geeks make me a happy Sorcy.
