After the better part of a decade of playing off and on, I've finally done it. I went mounted almost the whole way, except for the final 10 steps or so . . . I'll get to that.
I forget now what took out my warhorse. Much sadness; I stashed the saddle somewhere and wandered around for a good while looking for a new mount. I think I picked up another horse for a little while, but I was running out of apples/carrots, and I remember one starved to death under me.
On foot for a while longer, then came up with a scroll of taming right around when I found the portal to Fort Ludios. I love riding silver dragons. I know at some point I cleared out the fort and gave all the money to the priest in Minetown. I'm pretty sure I was on the dragon when I did the quest. Then it ate a doppleganger, and a barrow wight just doesn't make a good mount.
Fortunately, by now I knew taming. I had the idea to try out mountain centaurs, and had seen one wandering around. There's definitely something nice about a mount who'll wear armor and wield weapons (and wear an amulet of reflection), and they're plenty fast (unlike the dragon). I'd take them earlier if I could in the future. Unfortunately, their lack of flight is a bit of a handicap.
My first big break came when I got to Medusa's Island. I saw a robe sitting around on a little island outside (nice), and thought I'd run and grab it before going back to do a bit of cleanup higher in the dungeon and try to come up with a better means of levitation than potions. So I drank my blessed potion of levitation, and a djinn popped out and offered me a wish. Handy. Silver dragon scale-mail means I don't have to keep wearing this amulet of reflection, and can start casting spells effectively.
I exhausted the charges in a wand of polymorph trying to get some better rings and spellbooks (ultimately largely successful, and kind of fun), then headed downward.
In the Castle, I wished for a blessed figurine of a ki-rin. *That* is a sweet mount. It gets bonus points for healing itself. I rode it for the rest of the game, until a mess of enemies on the Astral Plane brought it down as I was dashing for what turned out to be Lugh's altar (second one I looked at).
Not much else particularly interesting, except I suppose the little brag that this was the first time I saw the Wizard of Yendor. I was ready.
I'm sad I let the ki-rin drop on my way to the end, though. I'd even wished for a stethescope to keep an eye on it.

Never played nethack or any version of the game younger than me... or at least, younger than my little sister. It's possible the version I was playing was from '82.
So anyhow, it sounds like fun, congrats!

There are plenty of younger people playing the rogue-likes. Of course, most people looking at the T-shirt would think it was about Nethack, I'd expect.

I need to try a melee class at some point; I've worked on monk, but that's kinda similar to wizard (only worse).

Yeah, you should. I should actually ascend a valkyrie sometime; as far as I've played them, they really do seem to be as easy as everybody says. Half damage from everything? Sweet.
I'm not sure I'd call knights a melee class. They actually do best mounted and dancing just out of melee reach with the lance, occasionally jousting for big damage and a stun. Then somewhere midgame they transition into a nice mixed pounding/casting class, with heals (keep mount healthy), create sacrifice, and obscenely powerful magic missiles added in to the tap, tap, pound, withdraw, repeat routine. Did I mention the obscenely powerful magic missiles?
I need to relearn how to play classes which start the game soft and squishy. I've been doing too much knight, valkyrie, and monk lately; I forget to keep back enough.
